What Is the Dissolve Method

Dissolve, known for years as Dissolve Therapy and now as the Dissolve Method, is a practice of release created by Andy Mack in 2012 and taught today by Andy and Kat Mack through treatment, yoga and meditation. One cycle sits underneath all of it: See, Know, Let Go, Enjoy.

Peace is there.
Dissolve helps you find it.

Stop right now. Can you feel it? A little bit of tension, lurking — in the body, in the mind. It's always there, more or less. We call it discomfort. We call it boredom, anxiety, fear, sadness, anger.

Dissolve isn't about trying to be happy, or trying to push the fear away, or intellectualising any of it. It's learning to look properly at our reaction — to the world, to ourselves, to the body — and forming a new habit of release.

You already know how to release. We all do. We just can't do it at will, we can't do it deeply or consistently. We just get confused — looking the wrong way, in the wrong direction. Dissolve gives you the tools to look properly. And as you look properly, it changes.

One practice. Use it everywhere.

You’re not learning a thousand different techniques. You learn the same simple cycle of release:

See · Know · Let Go · Enjoy

You can train it through postures, through movement, sitting still, or hands-on with another person. The mode changes. The practice does not. You practise the same thing until you can recognise it and use it in ordinary life.

Different places to practise. The same thing to learn.

The Path That Led to Dissolve

The concept and method of Dissolve became clear to Andy Mack in 2012, about a year after meeting Thai meditation master Luang Phor Jumnien in Chiang Mai.

"Jumnien is the strongest illustration of the spiritual goal fulfilled that I have encountered — radiating deep and complete release and joy at all times. He is like a light bulb, or a sun. See, Know, Let Go, Enjoy — Dissolve is an expression of that."

Andy and his son Duran moved to Thailand in 2011. Years of residential training followed in the forest temples of Luang Phor Tong, Kruba Noi, Luang Phor Plien and Luang Phor Anan — each from a different strand of the Thai Buddhist tradition. The first meeting with Luang Phor Jumnien triggered eighteen months of no-thought. Dissolve was born about a year later.

Behind it sit twenty-one years of continuous practice. Nineteen of those were spent training under Adam Mizner of Heaven Man Earth Taiji, where Andy was one of Adam's two senior students and head instructor for HME Europe: meditation, qigong and the classical internal forms, ten to twelve hours a day, across Australia, Thailand and Europe. Underneath all of it, the work was always the mind.

Kat and Andy, today

In 2018 Andy moved to London, practising from Akasha Spa at Hotel Café Royal in Piccadilly. Today Dissolve is led by Kat and Andy together, from Brazil. Kat is a fully qualified practitioner who trains and practises with Andy every day.

They teach, treat and keep developing the work side by side: Dissolve, Alignment and Bonesetting, and the one practice underneath them all. The aim is simple. Give people what they need to practise for themselves.

Four short conversations from our videos.

What is Dissolve?

KatHey, hello. How's it going? So tell us a little bit about what is Dissolve.

AndySo Dissolve is a complete package. We have the therapy, so it's a one-to-one therapy, we have yoga and the meditation. And each of these components comes together to rewire the way you look at the world.

KatWhat do you mean by that?

AndyWell, if you stop right now and you soften, can you feel there's a little bit of tension?

KatYes.

AndyIn the mind?

KatYes.

AndyIt's always there. And so this is the same for everyone that I've ever met. Well, certainly that I've asked this to, anyway. And it's certainly true with myself. So this contraction, it's always just lurking there. And it makes us feel uncomfortable. And we call that discomfort things like anxiety, and we call it fear, and we call it sadness, and anger, and jealousy.

KatCan it be even like good feelings?

AndyIt can change. So generally speaking, if you're feeling happy and open and released, you're not so contracted. But when you try to stay happy, then it switches. And then that contraction makes you feel anxious about not being happy, right?

KatThat's what I was thinking.

AndyYeah. And so instead of trying to be happy, instead of trying not to be sad, or instead of trying to push the fear away, or to intellectualise it, what we're doing is we're looking at our reaction to our world, to ourselves, to our body. I mean, most of us even have a contraction toward our body. You know, if I ask you to perceive your breathing right now, or your shoulders, or your eyes.

KatI'm holding a little bit, yes.

AndyYeah. And so Dissolve lets us take a step back into ourselves, and we start to see very clearly what's going on. And not only see clearly, it gives us the tools to rewire how we deal with ourselves, and with everyone else.

KatSo what kind of tools do we have in Dissolve?

AndyWell, we have a one-on-one treatment. We call that Dissolve Therapy. And that takes about an hour. And within that hour, it's absolutely so surprising how the therapist and yourself are able to change the way you look at yourself. And once we start this ball rolling, it really changes your whole world.

KatBecause you rewire the way you see the world.

AndyExactly, exactly.

KatAnd you have two more things.

AndyWe do, we do. We have the yoga. And so the Dissolve Yoga is a way to practise this stuff at home and really embody it. And then the meditation, the Dissolve Meditation, is another way. It's an extension. Well, it's the base, an extension. It all works together.

KatYeah.

AndyAll three work together. And so the meditation allows you just to be still, allows you to see what's going on and just work on these principles. And then, because most of our life is not still, most of our life is interacting with our world, Dissolve teaches you how to do that. So, sure, you can do it in stillness, but you can do it on the move as well. And that, for me, is the most beneficial thing. You can do it on the subway, you can do it in the car, you can do it on the beach with your partner, you can do it in the toilet, you can do it eating dinner.

KatSo no matter what you're doing, you can always dissolve?

AndyExactly. Exactly, because it's a process.

KatYes.

AndyAnd it's this process of seeing, knowing — knowing the cause of your discomfort — and then applying a cure to that. And it all happens like this. It's not some sort of an intellectual debate that you have to carry out with yourself or others. We just learn how to look properly. And as you look properly, it changes. And we know this. We intrinsically know how to release, but we get confused. We are confused for the most part. We're looking in the wrong way, in the wrong direction.

KatYeah, we don't have the tools.

AndyYeah, and that's it. So that's Dissolve. It's easy.

KatIt's beautiful.

AndyIt is. It's beautiful. Now, now, now, now. So get into it.

KatDissolve. Rock your world. We'll see you around, hopefully. Bye.

What is Dissolve Therapy?

AndyHey.

KatHello. Hi. Tell us about Dissolve Therapy.

AndySo, Dissolve Therapy is very interesting. I have not come across anything like it before — well, certainly before I started doing it. Maybe there's some stuff out there now. But certainly it's quite unique, because it's a one-on-one treatment. So I'll give you a treatment or you give me a treatment, and I'm lying down and you're sitting up next to me, and you are basically reprogramming — well, you're helping me to reprogram myself, because I've got to learn this skill myself.

AndyIn the beginning of Dissolve, I used to do it on the person and I would make them feel better. And some of the more astute people would understand what was going on. And then I started to realise I need to teach this as I'm doing it. And so over the past 12, 13 years, it's become this dynamic treatment. And so as I'm doing it to you, I'm telling you what's going on and guiding you what to do from your end. And then we both meet in the middle. And that middle is where the magic happens, because you realise, oh my God, I'm holding for no apparent reason.

KatYes.

AndyTension in my pancreas. What the hell is that about? I didn't even know I had a pancreas.

KatYeah, right.

AndyOr in my butt, or in my liver, or wherever it is that you're holding onto. In the face, in the eyes. And then of course your therapist will show you exactly what's going on, and then you release it, and you go through a process to release it. So you learn the skill. And then as you release — oh, this flood of release, and blood and fluid comes back into that organ that you've just depressurised.

KatYes.

AndyAnd it feels amazing.

KatAnd in a few words, what is the process of Dissolve Therapy?

AndySee, Know, Let Go, and then Enjoy. So four phrases: See, Know, Let Go and Enjoy. And so we are looking. The therapist points you in the right direction. You see the cause of your b******t. And through the training in the treatment, you are shown how to release that, and then how to enjoy it as well. Because that's a very overlooked facet of spiritual development —

KatYes.

Andy— is the joy part.

KatYeah.

AndyAnd so this is Dissolve Therapy in a nutshell.

KatThat's incredible.

AndyI know.

KatIt's incredible, because I have been through it.

AndyYeah. But if you want to learn —

KatYeah, you should definitely do the course.

AndyExactly. Yeah. Or go and see a therapist.

KatYes.

AndyWe've got some beautiful people around the world that have really embodied this process. And they've signed contracts. They've signed contracts that they have to train every day. And so our guys and girls are dissolving. And so when you meet up with them, this is just what they do. And you can see it in their eyes. You can see it in their faces.

KatYes.

AndyAnd they train every day. They've trained just before you walk into that room. And so by the time they touch you, you're already —

KatThey're already taking you on a trip, right?

AndyYes. Yeah. Exactly. And so you're getting the best. And so instead of your therapist needing therapy, your therapist is doing the work. And so they're showing you, they're a guide for you. And this is so important. And in a way you're also a guide to them.

KatIt's beautiful. It's partner work.

AndyYeah. Exactly right. So that's the most beautiful thing for me as a therapist —

KatYes.

Andy— is that I'm working on myself as I'm working on you, and releasing myself.

KatOf course. That's the work. You're releasing yourself.

AndyYes. And we both get up and leave the room. It's good. It's really good. So if that sounds like something you'd like to do, join the course now. We'll see you in there. Bye.

A session takes about an hour. Receive one from a qualified practitioner through Find Dissolve, or learn to give one in the Dissolve Treatment online course (you'll need a practice partner).

What is Dissolve Yoga?

AndyHey, hello, hello, Mr. Splits the dog. How are you? You can't see this guy down here, but he's with us again. And he is the star of our Dissolve Yoga course. And so the Dissolve Yoga is one of the tools that we have at our disposal, and it is a daily practice that we want you guys to get into, and it will enable you to get really deep within yourself and see what's going on with your awareness in relation to yourself, to your body.

KatSo this is the main difference from other types of yoga?

AndyIt depends. It depends on the teacher. So yoga has been around for a long time. And within that time, there have been some marvellous teachers. And of course, essentially, yoga is meditation. So this is where yoga is coming from. It comes from people that devoted themselves to finding the truth. And so, of course, modern yoga is a little bit different to that.

KatYes.

AndyAgain, depending on your teacher.

KatYes.

AndySo the way we look at it is, I suppose, a more traditional way. It's coming from the yogic meditative point of view. And we use the yoga and the meditation and the Dissolve Therapy to bring this process of release into ourselves. And so we become release, rather than philosophising about release.

KatYes.

AndySo if that sounds like something you'd like to get into, you should. And it will make the body feel great. It makes the mind feel fantastic. As you release, of course. I mean, that's what we're all about. Every person, even this puppy dog here, is trying to find release.

KatExactly. He's here for the cuddles.

AndyYes. And so he loves the cuddles and the bones. And so that's what he gets into. Of course, if he doesn't get the bones, maybe he might get angry. I don't know. But that's what happens to us. We sort of stumble along, and most of us don't know how to find release, except through eating ice cream or watching a movie or getting drunk or whatever.

KatSo getting in the body is one of the best ways to start.

AndyIt's a fantastic way to start, and it also anchors the mind. So instead of the mind flipping out and being everywhere, the mind comes back in. And that's one of the great benefits of it, the stability. So again, if it sounds like something that you'd like to get into —

KatIf you like peace.

AndyIf you like peace. Do you like peace? I like peace. Get into it.

KatGet into it, yeah. Check it out. Bye.

What is Dissolve Meditation?

AndyHey.

KatHey, hey. Tell us about Dissolve Meditation.

AndySo Dissolve Meditation is part of the Dissolve trilogy of tools. So we have Dissolve Therapy, which is the partner, one-on-one treatment facet. Then we have the yoga, which is a way to really embody this release process. And then the meditation is a fantastic tool, so that we soften, we still the mind, and we really allow ourselves to see what's going on inside.

KatAnd it's where it all came from, right?

AndyYeah, exactly. The meditation is where it came from. So in my early practice, I devoted myself to meditation and tai chi and yoga, but meditation was the base of all my practice. And so I would sit formal meditation for hours a day. And then of course, as you get a grasp of this meditation, it spills into your daily life. And so you become that meditation, you become release.

AndyAnd so all of our meditations — and there's not too many of them, which is one of the most beautiful things — it's very simple. But of course, when things are simple, it allows you to get really deep, because there's not much confusion.

KatYes.

AndyYou're not trying to learn a thousand things. It's all one thing. And that one thing is: this feels uncomfortable…

AndyAnd so the Dissolve Meditation is geared a hundred percent around this sequence of release. And it's a way for us to understand what's going on in our lives, instead of being a victim. So instead of, okay, I'm an angry person, I'm a sad person, I'm a jealous person, I am anxious, I'm fearful, whatever it is — instead of getting caught in that trap (hey, puppy dog), instead of getting caught in that trap, we take a step back, and we have a look inside, and we begin to work out what's going on.

KatAnd so it's very important.

AndyIt is very important. Maybe the most important thing, I would say.

KatYeah.

AndyYeah. And so the Dissolve Meditation is just a facet of our training, and it's a very beautiful facet, very blissful facet. And of course, I'm doing it right now. And so — I can see it in your eyes. And so it just becomes part of what you're doing and who you are.

KatYes. Sounds good. Sounds incredible.

AndyAlright, so if that sounds like something you'd like to do, do it. Alright, fantastic. Bye bye.

Is Dissolve a somatic therapy?

Dissolve works with the contraction in the mind: our reaction to the world, to ourselves and to our body. It was created by Andy Mack in 2012 and is taught with Kat Mack through treatment, yoga and meditation, with one cycle underneath all three: See, Know, Let Go, Enjoy.
